May is Mediterranean Diet Month!

Did you know that the Mediterranean diet has become so popular in the United States that is has its own food pyramid, and now its own month?  Yes, May is officially “National Mediterranean Diet Month,” so break out your best olive oil and celebrate!

Of course, for many people this is not a “diet” but a lifestyle.  The Mediterranean Diet reflects a way of eating that is traditional in the countries that surround the Mediterranean, but you don’t need to travel any further than to your local supermarket or restaurant to discover its delicious flavors and fresh foods. It’s easy to bring Mediterranean cuisine into your daily life and even your catered affairs!

Of course, it is well-known for its health benefits, including enabling individuals to control weight, lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, reduce their risk of diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and basically protect against a host of chronic conditions.  The benefits of monounsaturated fats, fiber and lean proteins found in Mediterranean cuisine simply cannot be replaced by a supplement!

With all the health benefits, it is easy to forget that Mediterranean cuisine tastes good!   It is comprised of wonderful tastes, rich flavors and a focus on freshness. Heavy on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes and plant-based fats (nuts, olive oil, avocado), yet light on meat, dairy, alcohol and sweets, Mediterranean cuisine has something for everyone.
